Goals
  • ♦  Elevate national, state, and community focus and commitment to the health, safety, and well-being of adolescents, young adults and their families.
  • ♦  Increase adolescents' and young adults' access to quality health care, including comprehensive general health, oral health, mental health, and substance abuse prevention and treatment services.
  • ♦  Improve health and safety outcomes for adolescents and young adults in such areas as unintentional injury, violence, mental health, substance use, reproductive health, and nutrition and physical activity.
  • ♦  Eliminate health disparities among adolescents and young adults, and for these age groups compared to other age groups.

The National Initiative Logic Model provides a roadmap for achieving the four goals; to review the Logic Model, click here.

21 Critical Objectives

The National Initiative aims to achieve the 21 Critical Health Objectives for Adolescents & Young Adults found in Healthy People 2010. These objectives focus on individual health outcomes and related behaviors that pose the greatest threat to the health of adolescents and, subsequently, adults. They focus on the following six areas:

  • ♦  Mortality
  • ♦  Unintentional Injury
  • ♦  Violence
  • ♦  Mental Health & Substance Abuse
  • ♦  Reproductive Health
  • ♦  Chronic Disease

The National Initiative takes a broad view of adolescent health, recognizing that healthy youth development and safe, nurturing environments are important in helping young people make healthy decisions. For more information about our philosophy and approach, go here.
