Health Futures of Youth II: Pathways to Adolescent Health, Executive Summary and Overview

In 1998, 124 leaders in the adolescent health field met for three days, with support from the federal Maternal and Child Health Bureau, Health Services and Resources Administration. The meeting, Health Futures of Youth II, aimed to advance the field of adolescent health based on the most current knowledge of adolescent health issues.

Led by co-chairs Drs. Charles Irwin of NAHIC and the late Paula Duncan of the University of Vermont, participants spanned multiple fields, such as health, development, education, communication and economics and addressed individual, community, social and policy influences on health and healthy development.

The meeting’s work led to a comprehensive set of recommendations and reviews, available in a supplement to the Journal of Adolescent Health, published in December 2002. An executive summary, written by Drs. Irwin and Duncan, presents an overview these discussions.
